How to Choose Chainring Gearing for Road, TT and Triathlon
50-34T: compact versatility
A 50-34T double combines a 50-tooth large ring with a 34-tooth small ring. It is a familiar option for riders who want a broad usable range for varied roads.
The smaller inner ring is helpful on sustained climbs, rolling terrain and long rides where maintaining a comfortable cadence matters. The 50-tooth outer ring still provides useful high-speed gearing for most road riding.
Consider 50-34T if your routes include significant climbing, if endurance is a priority or if you prefer smaller jumps in effort when the gradient changes.
52-36T: the mid-compact balance
A 52-36T combination sits between compact and larger race-oriented gearing. It gives the rider a larger top gear than 50-34T while retaining a 36-tooth inner ring for climbing and general road use.
This makes it a popular all-round concept for faster group riding, rolling races and riders who want more high-speed range without moving to the largest double option.
Consider 52-36T if your riding mixes speed, climbing and longer road events, and your cassette provides an appropriate low gear for local terrain.
54-38T: higher-speed road use
A 54-38T combination moves both rings upward. It is intended for riders who can use the additional high-speed gearing and who have considered the effect of the 38-tooth inner ring on climbing cadence.
This setup can suit fast road racing, flatter courses or powerful riders who spend more time at higher speeds. It is less forgiving on steep terrain than smaller combinations, so the complete gear range must be considered with the cassette.
Choose 54-38T because it matches the rider and course, not simply because it is the largest option.
1x gearing: simple controls, specific range
A 1x drivetrain uses one chainring and removes the front shift. It simplifies controls and can produce a clean drivetrain layout, but the tooth count must be paired carefully with the cassette.
LiteTech's aluminum 1x range covers 42T to 58T, supporting a variety of road and custom applications. The full-carbon 1x range is focused on TT and triathlon, with a stated 52T to 60T range and detailed options for Shimano R7100, R8100 and R9200 platforms.
Larger 1x rings can support high-speed riding, while smaller options increase the available climbing gear. Cassette range and the size of the jumps between rear sprockets will shape how the setup feels.

Five compatibility checks before ordering
1. Confirm the mounting interface
Check the crank model, bolt pattern, BCD and number of arms. LiteTech carbon double chainrings use a 110 BCD four-arm interface. Product compatibility should always be confirmed against the exact crank.
2. Confirm drivetrain speed and brand
The carbon double range supports Shimano 11/12-speed and SRAM 11/12-speed drivetrains. The aluminum range is designed around Shimano 12-speed systems. Do not assume that matching tooth counts automatically means matching shift geometry.
3. Check the full gear range
Evaluate the chainring together with the cassette. A larger chainring increases top-end development but also raises the lowest available gear. Make sure the combination fits the steepest terrain and the cadence you can sustain.
4. Decide whether front shifting is required
A double setup needs compatible small and large rings, suitable shift features and correct front-derailleur adjustment. A 1x setup removes the front shift but requires careful chain management.
5. Check installation requirements
LiteTech's current chainring guidance specifies a 5 mm hex interface with a maximum tightening torque of 10 Nm. Always follow the instructions for the crank, fasteners and chainring being installed. If in doubt, use a qualified bicycle mechanic.
